Going with the flow (and saying Hello! to 2018) | Life

Ahhhh, 2018, I can't believe you're here so soon! I remember when I was a kid and getting up super early to watch the announcement of who would be the 2000 Olympic Games host. When Sydney was announced as the winner I was so excited I woke up my parents. From memory I was 11. I remember thinking how far away the year 2000 was, the idea of being 18 and in year 12 just didn't seem real. And contemplating any time beyond 2000? It felt like the stuff fiction is made of!

And yet here we are though, 9 days in to 2018. 2018!!! I gotta say, its been a lot of fun so far! And HOT. Let's not forget HOT!

At the end of last year I'd managed to orchestrate this entire month of January off, but just after Christmas I was offered work on a big shoot for one of the studios I contract to and I couldn't say no. So in 2 days time I'll start work on a 4 week full-time job and in the meantime I've been trying to make the most of my last days off and spend time with the girls.

I had planned on spending some of my time off in January planning for the year, working out goals and figuring out where I wanted to go this year with regards to business & personal stuff. I've been thinking a lot about what my one word for 2018 would be, and in the course of spending time with the girls relaxing I realised that I didn't want to come up with a word and plans and goals.

I know it goes against everything anyone will tell you in terms of building a business & success, etc, etc, but honestly? I've spent the last 2 years being super stressed and anxious about what I was doing with my life and my business, worrying about money, pouring countless hours in to planning and goal-setting and marketing and all the rest of it and all it's left me with is anxious.

With all of that in mind, I've decided that in 2018 I'm not going to choose a word. I'm not going to set lots of goals. I'm just gonna go with the flow and see where it takes me.

A lot of the things that have happened in my life have happened when I've least expected them. I can make all the plans in the world and spend all the money in the world on advertising and marketing and what-not and in the end it's been the relationships and the people that I know that have brought me jobs and opportunities.

So I'm going to focus on people this year, building relationships with the people around me, both new and those I already know. I'm going to keep shooting what I love and putting my work out there in to the world and trust that the people who value it will find me when they are meant to find me.

It's a risky move, but it's one I feel is right for me at this moment in time.

2018 is Zee's last year at home before she heads off to school in 2019, and I really want to make the most of it and spend as much time being with her as I can. I don't want to be chained to my desk "hustling" when I could be playing hairdressers, having my "make-up done" or going for milkshakes with my littlest. She'll be at preschool two days a week and that will be my time to knuckle down and get any work done that I need to, with more work in the evening after the girls are in bed if need be.

I already feel lighter for making the decision to try and have more fun and less anxiety in 2018. Making the decision that this year will be all about going with the flow feels right, and hopefully it will bring some interesting and rewarding experiences and revelations.

Have you made any goals or plans for 2018? Do you have a word to guide you throughout the year? Or have you decided to make a more freestyle approach like I have?

Welcome back to the first IBOT for 2018!!! I am so excited to have you here and linking up with us and I can't wait to get back in to this beautiful community of bloggers, photographers & creatives. Add your links below...

Go with the flow was my mantra last year and it worked beautifully. This year it's "go gently" so perhaps more of the same. I love the pictures of your kids in the water - just magical.
