What's In A Name? Introducing Punky
Before she even made her entrance to the world, before we even had the option of finding out if she was a girl, my Mum nicknamed our first daughter Punky. She was convinced, right from the start, that she would be a girl, and she was right.
Punky was the name Mum chose, in honour of my obsession with the girl wonder Punky Brewster, back when I was a wee babe in the 80's. Punky Brewster was my hero, I even went to school dressed as her once, for a themed mufti day. So Mum thought that the most appropriate nickname for our unborn baby was Punky.
As you all know by now, we did indeed have a daughter, but we did not call her Punky. You know her name. Everyone knows her name. Google even knows her name.
Lately I've been thinking more and more about how much comes up when you google my daughter's name. I'm not too fussed about what I've written as I make a point not to write anything that may embarrass her in years to come.
I've posted a lot of photos of her too, but again, I've posted only photos that I know in years to come she will enjoy being able to look at. I have two motivations for posting pictures and only one of them is because, naturally, I think she is the most gorgeous thing to walk the earth. The other motivation is wanting to showcase my photography, one of the reasons I started blogging in the first place 4 years ago.
As she gets older, and her google search footprint grows (because of me) I've decided that it might be time to limit what is searchable under her own name on the WWW.
I won't stop posting about her and I won't stop posting pictures, but I won't be using her real name anymore, i'll be referring to her as Punky.
This doesn't really have anything to do with cyber safety or anything, it's about wanting to limit the stuff that comes up under a search of her name in the future. Being a child of the i-generation, by the time she is an adult her online footprint is going to be HUGE. So by using Punky, there won't be as much stuff that comes up so easily, should an employer or the like decide to google her. Does that make sense?
I know a lot of you do or don't post your children's names and images online. There's been a lot of talk about it on various blogs for a while now and it's just been bubbling away in the back of my brain for some time. Only now has it clarified enough for me to decide what I wanted to do.
I don't want to erase her digital footprint, I just want to limit what's out there under her real name from now on, and as she gets older. Until she can make the decision for herself of what will be posted under her real name.
When PJ#2 comes along I will announce her name (if we ever agree on one!) when I announce her birth, but then ill come up with a cute moniker for her too. Or my Mum will.
Do you use your kids names/pictures in your blogging? Do you have concerns when it comes to your kids' digital footprint in years to come?

Punky is a perfect name!
I have used aliases for my kids from day 1 (they chose them) and my #1 reason was the digital footprint so that when you search their real names in the future it won't bring up my blog. I figured they should build that themselves and this way I did not have to worry about each reference I make (even if in the current moment I think they would be fine with it)
I love Punky Brewster too xx

I have to write about them, they're pretty much my whole life at the moment. My blog would be about washing otherwise.
It's hard to know isn't it, what will or won't work in the future, just gotta do the best we can I suppose.
It really is the perfect name, its funny how it ended up suiting her so well. My Mum calls her that all the time, so does my bro-in-law.
I LOL'ed at the name Punky and think that it's THE perfect little pseudonym for your Miss - hmmmm hope your Mum's got her thinking cap on for #2
