What's In A Name? Introducing Punky

Before she even made her entrance to the world, before we even had the option of finding out if she was a girl, my Mum nicknamed our first daughter Punky. She was convinced, right from the start, that she would be a girl, and she was right.

Punky was the name Mum chose, in honour of my obsession with the girl wonder Punky Brewster, back when I was a wee babe in the 80's. Punky Brewster was my hero, I even went to school dressed as her once, for a themed mufti day. So Mum thought that the most appropriate nickname for our unborn baby was Punky.

As you all know by now, we did indeed have a daughter, but we did not call her Punky. You know her name. Everyone knows her name. Google even knows her name.

Lately I've been thinking more and more about how much comes up when you google my daughter's name. I'm not too fussed about what I've written as I make a point not to write anything that may embarrass her in years to come.

I've posted a lot of photos of her too, but again, I've posted only photos that I know in years to come she will enjoy being able to look at. I have two motivations for posting pictures and only one of them is because, naturally, I think she is the most gorgeous thing to walk the earth. The other motivation is wanting to showcase my photography, one of the reasons I started blogging in the first place 4 years ago.

As she gets older, and her google search footprint grows (because of me) I've decided that it might be time to limit what is searchable under her own name on the WWW.

I won't stop posting about her and I won't stop posting pictures, but I won't be using her real name anymore, i'll be referring to her as Punky.

This doesn't really have anything to do with cyber safety or anything, it's about wanting to limit the stuff that comes up under a search of her name in the future. Being a child of the i-generation, by the time she is an adult her online footprint is going to be HUGE. So by using Punky, there won't be as much stuff that comes up so easily, should an employer or the like decide to google her. Does that make sense?
My own little Punky
I know a lot of you do or don't post your children's names and images online. There's been a lot of talk about it on various blogs for a while now and it's just been bubbling away in the back of my brain for some time. Only now has it clarified enough for me to decide what I wanted to do.

I don't want to erase her digital footprint, I just want to limit what's out there under her real name from now on, and as she gets older. Until she can make the decision for herself of what will be posted under her real name.

When PJ#2 comes along I will announce her name (if we ever agree on one!) when I announce her birth, but then ill come up with a cute moniker for her too. Or my Mum will.

Do you use your kids names/pictures in your blogging? Do you have concerns when it comes to your kids' digital footprint in years to come?

This is something that's often in the back of my mind... though I have never actually googled Lior's name. Might do that now. If's too scary, then you'll see him with a sudo name ASAP! Haha!

You know that I don't use the boys names on my blog, and you have summed it up very nicely. I don't want them to be googlable later by friends, peers, frenemies, employers.. anyone. People can be so cruel and I am not going to be giving away free ammo that might hurt my boys.

Punky is a perfect name!

Love the name! I am thinking along these lines exactly. Maybe I should do an official announcement like you. x

Loved pinky myself so think it is adorable.
I have used aliases for my kids from day 1 (they chose them) and my #1 reason was the digital footprint so that when you search their real names in the future it won't bring up my blog. I figured they should build that themselves and this way I did not have to worry about each reference I make (even if in the current moment I think they would be fine with it)

I think it's smart of you. Not for nefarious reasons, but it all just sits there and we don't really know what will happen yet....I don't even use my kids names or photos on FB, so I'm the extreme end of the spectrum.

I tried to be a bit anonymous and referred to nick as "Master N" just "N" but I figure "Nick" is probably stil fairly generic. But then I post pics often and think "Well there goes the anonymity!" I changed my blog name because it used to be MY name, which is really unique - guarantee there's not another one in the world! There's not another one on facebook, so there musnt' be lol! p.s. I used to love punky brewster!

love it!! MissC and MasterS are mine.. but some people know their names.. some people dont.. I mainly refer them to the lil ones - or little man etc.. :)

I love Punky Brewster too xx

I had never thought about this topic and now I can't stop. I put The Boy out there because I am so proud of him but I suppose I do need to have a serious think about whether to tone it down. It's always good to read a post that makes you think Kylie, job done.

I used to and bizarely I still use one for hubby. I guess when I changed from anon blogging to blogging with my own name I just felt more open I guess. It does concern me though, how much of a digital footprint is there for him - in the lead up to sending him to a Christian school I've thought maybe it is time for me to change back to using a pseudonym. I love the idea of announcing it like this, might just steal it!

I don't use my family's name but I use mine, so I guess people could find out stuff if they wanted to. I don't publish nude photos and I don't publish negative stories, just cute tales, about them. We have negative stuff, obvs, but it's personal.

It is a big concern. I have chosen not to put my sons name up on the blog. I originally was not going to put photos up either, but that was a little too hard to stick to :)

Hey Mother of Punky, I think that's the perfect compromise. I didn't give my kids code names for such a considered reason, more because it made me seem like a spy, but now I see that it was a sound choice.
I have to write about them, they're pretty much my whole life at the moment. My blog would be about washing otherwise.

Very interesting post Kylie. Even though I don't have children, I often think about the impact of blogs on the future of these children. What are they going to think when they will be teenagers? I'm not sure what I will do when I will have to face this decision...
Kylie Purtell said…
It's something I've been concerned about, and am not sure how to tackle. I previously had them in their own categories, but got rid of those recently. I'd like to give them all nick names just for this reason. I wonder if there is a plugin somewhere that goes through your posts, so you can find words and change them?
Kylie Purtell said…
I am thinking of this too, as I want to start blogging again when I move. I have called him Master Z, but I think a nickname will keep my interest more - will have to get on to that! Good on you for considering her needs in the future xx
Kylie Purtell said…
I love Punky Brewster! Wonder if you could find her show on DVD now? Anyway, back on topic, this is a difficult topic- I don't use the names of my boys - which makes it hard when posting birthday cakes with their name plastered all over them! I also try and use images that they would love in future or in turn, show very little of their face - I don't know if it will make any difference at all to their adult life - but it all sits better with me this way. I have no doubt the Universe will throw challenges either path you chose. Love the nickname Punky and love your choice xx
Kylie Purtell said…
I know for a fact you can get Punky Brewster on DVD as I my mum got me season 1 and 2 last year for my birthday! Can't wait to share them with my Punky!

It's hard to know isn't it, what will or won't work in the future, just gotta do the best we can I suppose.
Kylie Purtell said…
Thanks mate! I reckon the hardest part is choosing the right nickname. Thank god Mum did it for me!
Kylie Purtell said…
Oh man, that would make it so much easier! I don't think ill get all the references to her name but Ill try. It's definitely something I was thinking more and more about and figured it was better to do sooner rather than later.
Kylie Purtell said…
It's definitely an interesting thing as its not really something other generations have had to deal with. Personally I think Mia will enjoy being able to read about herself online and the struggles/joys being a Mum has bought me as I know growing up I always appreciated/understood my own Mum better when she shared this kind of stud with me.
Kylie Purtell said…
Definitely a sound choice! Without Mia I think my blog might have died a long time ago, I was pretty over it after 2 and a bit years and she gave me some inspiration when she came along, plus it was nice to have something to do outside of looking after her!
Kylie Purtell said…
I don't think I could survive not putting pics of Punky up, I take too many anyway to let then all languish on the hard drive if my computer!
Kylie Purtell said…
I agree, I try to keep everything pretty positive, I wouldn't go in to the really deep personal stuff, especially when it involves others because its not only my story.
Kylie Purtell said…
I switch between them all the time. Sometimes I refer to them by their ages (the teenager, the five year old etc) sometimes I use their names. Consistent I am not. I love the name Punky.
Kylie Purtell said…
I used to call Dave Mr.P but then stopped coz he didn't mind me using Dave. Funnily enough when you google his name there is half as much on him as there is Punky which is what got me thinking about it.
Kylie Purtell said…
I know what you mean, when Punky was first born I didn't even give it a second thought. But after a google search bought up so much, and reading other bloggers thoughts about it I thought I should do what I can to minimise without actually having to stop blogging about her all together.
Kylie Purtell said…
How awesome was Punky Brewster. Definitely a good namesake I think!
Kylie Purtell said…
I bought my domain name (my full name) long before Punky was even thought of and it never crossed my mind how it would effect things in the future, I just liked knowing I owned my own name. Now I must admit I'm actually tempted to buy Punky's in case she ever wants to use it down the track!
Kylie Purtell said…
And I think that's what wa playing on my mind, the not knowing what things will be like in the future. It's too late to change what's out there now but I figure if I can start to limit it then its a step in the right direction.
Kylie Purtell said…
That's definitely a good idea and if I ha my time over again I would polrobably do the same. I think this is one of the pitfalls of having blogged under my real name from long before Punky was even thought of so it didn't cross my mind when she was born.
Kylie Purtell said…
Thanks Zanni! You definitely should, at least that way everyone will know who these new people you're talking about are! Lol!
Kylie Purtell said…
I am kinda starting to wish I had done it from the start but I can't change the past, just limit what more happens in the future I guess. Well, try anyway!

It really is the perfect name, its funny how it ended up suiting her so well. My Mum calls her that all the time, so does my bro-in-law.
Kylie Purtell said…
I was seriously shocked by how much came up when I googled her, not that any of it is bad, just that anyone can find it whenever they want. I can't really change it now but I am hoping I can limit what goes out in the future and it has definitely made me mindful of what I post in future.
Kylie Purtell said…
As you know we use alternate names (the names of their teddy bears) for our kids on our blogs and I feel better for doing that. We made this decision for the same reasons - I really don't want someone to be able to google their name when they are an adult and find all these posts written by me when they were young. We also don't share full photos of them but we are thinking about relaxing this a bit in future - it's so hard to find the perfect balance, isn't it? By the way, I vote for Xena as a screen name for your next little one - she really kicked ass!
Kylie Purtell said…
I'm with you on this Kylez - on the blog I'll usually only refer to 2 of my 3 (the oldest at 15 and the youngest, aged 3) as my middle son (aged 13) has a HUGE aversion to social media, blogging, the internet, Facebook, Instagram etc and I respect his right not to have his specific activities or images mentioned on the web. With Mr 15, I'll always ask his permission first and I refer to him as My Big Boy (or something wanky like that). Baby Girl features much more, but never by name and I choose photos carefully. It's a modern dilemma and I think I'd always err on sensible.

I LOL'ed at the name Punky and think that it's THE perfect little pseudonym for your Miss - hmmmm hope your Mum's got her thinking cap on for #2
x
Kylie Purtell said…
I use No,1,2,3 - and I do use their images, although in saying that I should call them by age, as makes their behaviour more acceptable at times. I reckon do what feels right for you Ky xx

I've been really slack on the commenting lately, hey? Slack on the reading too but don't tell anyone. So yeah, I totally agree with what you're saying. Imagine when she's a teenager in high school and everyone knows everything because her Mamma has a big mouth. Or big hands. That type. You get what I'm saying. And I freaking love Punky.
Kylie Purtell said…
This is something I am REALLY struggling with at the moment. I really can't decide how I want to progress with this.....hhmmm....I have some thinking to do.
Kylie Purtell said…
I use Ned all over social media and my blog but that is not his name on his birth certificate so I guess there is a little anonymity. There's an actor called Ned Beattie so I figure if anyone googles that name the actor will come up before my Ned does. Punky Purtell has a great ring to it!

Ooh very interesting post. You raise a fascinating point and I'm tempted to think that the digital goal posts are changing the more generations grow up. It does Magee me think, and I've always been hesitant to share highly detailed stories about her. It's a fine line. Bloody loved Punky. You're a woman after my own heart :)
