This Makes Me SO MAD!

"Fury as family dies after high-speed police chase". This is the headline of an article on the SMH website today.

Basically the families of the people involved in this horrible accident are blaming the cops. And I quote from the article -
Mr Oppelaar's cousin, Jason Kelly, said: ''I purely blame police for it. He's getting chased and that's what young people do. They get scared and they take off,'' he told reporters.
'My brother is dead now because the police chased this car to the point where he didn't want to stop.''
I'm sorry, but I think the fact he was in a STOLEN CAR is the reason why the kid took off and didn't want to stop. He was BREAKING THE LAW! Should we ban all car chases and just let the crims get away with whatever the hell they like? This is not the police's fault. This is the diskhead that decided to steal a car's fault. The same dickhead that was in a coma 12 months before after an accident in which he was travelling in a STOLEN CAR!

Most young people, when flagged down by the cops, will stop. The only time people take off, which then starts a chase, is if they are Breaking The Law!

If all car chases are banned then anyone will just take off from the cops because they know they won't get chased. And then what happens? When a drink-driver kills someone because HE WAS BREAKING THE LAW we don't blame the cops and the fact that they should have an RBT on every corner to catch these people. We blame the dickhead that was stupid enough to get behind the wheel after drinking. And that is who we should be blame in this case. The dickhead that stole the car in the first place!

I understand it's human nature to want to blame someone for tradgedies, but this is no-one's fault but the driver who stole the car. The police already have very strict guidelines in place for chases, and while yes, it is dangerous, and I would be angry if it was my family that had been killed, I would be angry at the DRIVER of the Stolen Car, not the police. They were just doing there job.

Mr.P thinks that anyone who leads the cops on a car chase should get an Automatic jail sentence, no questions asked. He evern went as far as to suggest that they should get one year for every kilmotre they run. And I don't think that would be such a bad idea. If people were given harsh sentences for putting others at risk because they have Broken The Law and Run From The Cops then perhaps they would think twice before not stopping or even stealing that car in the first place.

Urgh! I'm just so pissed off. It's so easy to blame 'the cops' for everything.

Couldn't agree with you more!
My husband is a cop. Doesn't matter what they do it seems they just can't win.
Great post!

100% agree. Don't blame the cops, they are doing a job, blame the person breaking the law. It seems you are damned if you do and damned if you don't sometimes!

Yep, absolutely 1000% agree!! And I love D's idea too. The police get blamed for everything, whatever they do is wrong. How about we start blaming the criminals instead? Now there's a novel idea!!!
I agree completely. People don't seem to want to take responsibility for anything these days.

Police have a job to do. Simple.

This "kid" was breaking the law. Simple.

It is very sad he died. It is through his own actions that it happened at all. Simple.

Not everything is black and white, but police can't be blamed for trying to catch "the bad guy".

The media are happy to play the blame the police game. It's much better copy than blame the criminal.

I agree too and choked on my coffee when I heard the cousin on the news this morning. How can they pass the blame off like that? I know they've just lost a family member so will cut them some slack but seriously, it's not the "fault" of the police who are trained to do a job after all. And those poor, innocent people who got killed as a result. It's truly, truly AWFUL stuff.

OMG I am so happy that I've read this, I was another choking on my morning tea as I read what the cousin of the young family had said. It is sad but pointing the finger at the Police, seriously I know your mourning but some stupid young punk stole a car went for a joy ride, got caught and took off, no one made him run, he made that choice, if the finger gets pointed anywhere it is squarely on him.
I dont understand why people want to blame the police.

I for one think this family needs a good sharp slap around the head.
