I Should Be So Lucky that My Happiness isn't Under the Water so I can Praise You when You Shit Me to Tears! Asshole!

Back in May the lovely Jenni over at Story of My Life blog ran a Blog Every Day in May challenge. I didn't participate, well, I did one of the 31 prompts, but I bookmarked her list of prompts to come back to when I needed a little blogging inspiration.

Seeing as this week is 'freestyle' at The Lounge I thought I'd have a quick read through the prompts and see if anything caught my eye. I was gonna have a rant about fucking politics and how much the whole shebang is shitting me at the moment, not to mention those fucksticks in the media who are just trying to find stories where there are none, or none worth sharing anyway. But I decided against that. I'm gonna save that for when we get closer to the election coz I'm sure there is gonna be plenty of material for me to rant on with by then!

So today I'm using one of Jenni's prompts and I'm gonna bore regale you with...

Five songs or pieces of music that speak to you or bring back memories

1. I Should Be So Lucky by Kylie Minogue

- Now it should come as no surprise that I was a rather large Kylie fan back when I was a wee babe. If I'm totally honest, I'm still a rather large Kylie fan. And yes, my original fandom in the early years of primary school did  come about because of the whole "We have the same name!" thing. Anyone called Kylie has had the inevitable "Minogue?" followed by a laugh thrown at them (people are soooo original) but I've never minded that much. I thought they were dickheads, but that's ok.

Anyway, such a fan of Kylie was I, that the very first record I ever owned was the single I Should Be So Lucky. If I had been more prepared for this post (which was never gonna happen, I'm a blog by the seat of my pants kinda gal) I could show you a picture of said record sitting at the top of my wardrobe right now, but I'm not so I can't. I'll just leave you with the YouTube video for I Should Be So Lucky and tell you that I once went to school dressed up like Kylie for a mufti day, complete with my own (real!)  microphone! Oh, and that when I was 19 I finally got to see Kylie live in concert and I may or may not have teared up from excitement when she finally graced the stage!

2. Under the Water by Merril Bainbridge

- The album this song is from came out when I was in year 7. It featured that notorious-for-the-time, or maybe just notorious-to-my-Mum, song Mouth. You know, "When I kiss your mouth I wanna taste it...". Anyway, I LOVED Merril Bainbridge and I saved up all the money I could get my hands on so that I could buy the CD. Once I finally got a copy of my own I listened to it on repeat in my bedroom. Under the Water, whenever I hear the opening notes, always makes me think of year 7 & 8, long Christmas holidays, my first boyfriend, my first kiss, my first heartbreak!

And then I made the terrible mistake of asking to play it in the car one day. Well, let's just say Mum was most unapproving of some of the lyrics to the songs and within weeks the CD had vanished in to thin air. At the time I didn't put two and two together and I blamed my sister, who was always taking my stuff  for losing it. However only a few short years ago I discovered that Mum herself had taken the offending CD and thrown it in the bin without telling me and was more than happy for my sister to take the fall. This is a parenting technique that I have filed away for future reference and will not hesitate to use on my girls if I don't approve of something they are listening to or wearing! How I will throw out one song from iTunes I have no idea but I will come up with something!

3. Praise You by Fatboy Slim

- I was obsessed with the album You've Come a Long Way Baby when it first came out. Fatboy Slim was the first electronic music I had ever really gotten in to at the time and I loved every song on the album. My favourite by far was Praise You. Not just because it's an awesome song but it also has one of my most favourite film clips of all time! When I was in Year 12 I produced two videos for our graduation concert with footage taken throughout the year and I used Praise You as the music for one of them. It was pretty awesome, if I do say so myself! I can't hear this song and not get a massive smile on my face and think about the crazy dancers in the video clip or how much fun I had producing those videos. If you've not seen the video then do yourself a favour and watch it!

In 2009 I finally got my chance to see Fatboy Slim play when he was headlining the Good Vibrations festival and despite  the fact that it pissed down all day the short amount of time he played for was awesome. Not so awesome was the fact that the sound system fucked up about 15-20 minutes in to his set and that was effectively the end of the festival right there. I don't think I've ever been more pissed off about something that was out of my control!

4.My Happiness by Powderfinger

- This was a hard one as I am a massive fan of Powderfinger and I could have picked any number of songs. In the end I decided to go with My Happiness as I have so many good memories of road tripping with a friend out to her grandmothers property after school finished and singing this song over and over at the top of our lungs in the car. That same year a bunch of us went to see them in concert and it was so much fun. Not just the concert but the whole getting to the concert. Being the one with a large family and a Tarago (the newest one at the time, with non-standard, brand-new, in-built sat nav that blew everyone away!) I was often designated driver for my friends and I loved to be the bus driver and in charge of getting everyone around the place. It was awesome, and also meant that I got to choose the tunes and people paid for my sot drinks and food!

5. You Shit me to Tears by The Tenants

- This song. What can I say about this song other than it is totally brilliant. If you have not heard it before, listen to it right now! I didn't hear this song when it first came out. It's by a little band from Bathurst and they won Triple J's Unearthed music contest with it. The first time I heard it was just after school finished and a friend of mine and I were travelling down to my Aunty's holiday house for a few days at the beach. Another friend of ours made us a mix CD to listen to on the way down and this was on it. He prefaced the song by telling us that he was dedicating it to another mutual friend of ours and that once we listened to it we would know exactly who he was talking about. And we certainly did. And now whenever I think of her I can't help but think of this song too, because she really did shit us to tears!



Bonus Song - One of the greatest songs ever written and performed, Asshole by Dennis Leary. I was in Year 5 when I first heard this song and managed to get my hands on a copy of the tape. Let me tell you I knew from the beginning that Mum would not approve of this song and kept it well hidden and played on very low volume! I spent an entire day listening to it over and over and learning the words and to this day I can still remember every single one of them. It has one of the best rants in musical history and I LOVE, LOVE, LOVE this song! It speaks to me in a way that not many other songs do and that should tell you a bit about me right there!
