Gay Marriage. Seriously, can we not just move right along and get this show on the road.

Whether you 'believe' in gay marriage or not, let me get straight to the point of this post.

There are more important things for our politicians to be worrying about than whose marrying who.

Let's be perfectly honest. Gay marriage is NOT going to ruin the sanctity of marriage. Heterosexual people have done a good enough job of that themselves. It's a totally ridiculous argument in the defense of denying people equal rights.

The simple fact of the matter is that whether you think homosexuality is 'wrong' or 'right', every person deserves equal rights under the law, and equal protection from discrimination. I don't understand why that is so hard for people to get.

The time and effort that has been spent debating something in parliament that should really just be a non-issue is, to be frank, fucking ridiculous. To be honest, a lot of the time and effort that is spent in parliament on things that should be a non-issue is fucking ridiculous but that's another post for another time.

There are so many other things that politicians should be focusing their time and energy on. Healthcare, education, infrastructure. If they would just stop being such dickheads, just pass the bill to give equality to all in regards to marriage, then they could spend a bit more time focusing on some of those other things that concern everyone, and prove themselves to be semi-decent people.

I believe that equality is an important issue and one that shouldn't be taken lightly. And that's why I can't believe in 2013 this is still being debated so fiercely by people. Surely we have come far enough in this day and age that politicians can see how stupid it is to deny the equal rights of gay people, regardless of your own personal religion or thoughts on homosexuality. Granting those equal rights is not going to tear the fabric of society, but it will free up time for for politicians to get down to the business of improving this country for all Australians, whether they be gay, straight, whatever!

Legalise this basic human right so that we can all move on and make this country a better place for everyone. Giving marriage rights to gay people is such an easy step and small obstacle to remove on the path to a better Australia for all!

Here here! It is crazy to think that some people have nothing else on their minds than the fear of what others are doing in the privacy of their own love life.

Bloody well said!
I cannot understand, and never will, why there is even a question on the subject. Love is love. Who gives a shit who the person you love is, unless of course they are abusive. Now there is something. Spend your time on getting people out of abusive marriages and allow the ones that grow in love to go ahead.

Ditto from me re all the previous comments. So crazy that it's even a issue. Great post, Kylie.x

Agree totally Kylie. Why are we even wasting time discussing this in 2013?
Kylie Purtell said…
Absolutely - or is it a case of faffing about the 'smaller' issues so they don't have to deal with the really important ones like health care and education and caron tax ???
Maybe you should run for prime minister - I'd vote for you !!
Have a great weekend !

Yep. Marriage equality. It's not about 'letting the gays' (shudder at that terminology) marry. It's about equality. Grow up, world.

Totally agree with you, Kylie! It is a travesty that Gillard didn't have the balls to do something when she was in power. I wish Abbott would but he won't. It is a pity because I know so many Liberal Party members, both gay and straight, that are for marriage equality. This issue crosses the political divide and I think it would just take one leader to step up and do something and most of Australia would support it. I really hope it happens soon. V.

Agreed ... and really what business is it of anyone elses who we choose to love! Time to grow up world!

I wrote about same sex marriage on my blog a couple of months ago and had a guy comment saying that if we let 'let the gays' marry then the natural next step would be bestiality...ah what the fuck? I agree that there are so many more things that are worth spending time debating, just pass the bill already and say yes to equality.

Oh this just gets me so fired up. Everyone has a right to love and be loved and that includes marrying anyone they choose to. This country needs to stop acting so immature and lean acceptance. xx

I agree, just seems like a waste of debating time that could be spent on other things! As you say, there are plenty of straight people out there trampling all over the 'sanctity' of marriage. May as well just let people love who they love!

YAY - loved this rant - and I agree. Who gives a shiz about who marries who, shouldn't we be more worried about what someone does to someone else?! Catch up with NZ Australia, it's not cool! x
