Escape - A Book Review

Escape by Carolyn Jessop with Laura Palmer, Published by Penguin, ISBN: 9780141044255, Paperback, Aust. RRP: $24.99

I finished reading this on Friday night a couple of weeks ago and it absolutley gripped me. I found Carolyn's story riveting and if you're a fan of real-life reads then you'll love this.

What B.o.B says -
I was born into a radical polygamist cult. At eighteen, I became the fourth wife of a fifty-year-old man. I had eight children in fifteen years. When our leader began to preach the apocalypse, I knew I had to get them out....Escape exposes a world tantamount to a prison camp, created by religious fanatics who, in the name of God, deprive their followers of the right to make choices, force women to be totally subservient to men, and brain-wash children in church-run schools. Against this background, Carolyn Jessop's flight takes on an extraordinary, inspiring power. Not only did she manage a daring escape from a brutal environment, she becomes the first woman ever granted full custody of her children in a contested suit involving the FLDS (Fundamentalist Church of Later Day Saints, a radical and unsanctioned off-shoot of the Morman Church). And in 2006 her reports to the Utah attorney general on church abuses formed a crucial part of the case that led to the arrest of it's notorious leader, Warren Jeffs.

This is a really well-written story, very easy to understand and follow. It doesn't jump all over the place like some autobiogrpahies can.

What Carolyn has gone through is amazing, some horrible things have gone on in her life and the lives of those around her. The mental and physical abuse she endured, and the fact she was able to find the strength and courage to leave the FLDS, is inspiring to others who don't think they can handle what life throws at the them.

Carolyn refuses to give up hope and to stop fighting for her children. She is the first woman who has ever won custody against the FLDS and that is enough to give other women in her situation the courage to fight and not give in to the disgusting pigs that run the FLDS.

An inspiring woman and a fantastic read. I highly reccommend.

A Big Thumbs-Up.
