Gaining Clarity {and saying goodbye to 2017} | Life

At the start of the year, I opened up IBOT by sharing my word for the year, clarity. I thought it would be quite fitting to close out IBOT for the year by having a look back at 2017 and how my word panned out.

Stuff & Things | Life

It's Monday afternoon and I'm sitting here, feeling all sorry for myself because I was hoping to avoid going to the Carols night at Punky's school because it's hot, I'm tired, and the last thing I feel like doing is sitting in the sun on the school oval by myself with two kids. Dave is on night shift and I had planned on having a night doing nothing but binging Downton Abbey on Netflix, but alas. She came home from school all excited to go and begged me to please, please take her, so what can I say? How can I refuse her?

In the grand scheme of life it's not a big deal, and there are certainly worse things in the world, I know. For instance, facing the prospect of your kid being in hospital over Christmas.

Shooting through 2017 {November} | 52 week project

Today I'm over at Westmead Kids hospital filming for something a little special that is going on over there. I'm not sure if I can say much more than that at this stage but keep your eyes peeled on social media, coz you know I'll share the end result when it's ready.

We're at the pointy end of the year now and the weeks are just flying by. It's less than 3 weeks till Christmas now and I'm starting to feel the pressure of making sure I've got everything on my lists bought & prepared. This week I'll be finishing off the gifts for Punky's Kindy teacher and Zee's preschool teachers. If you have any suggestions for fabulous things that won't break the bank I am all ears!

Six {A Birthday Letter to Punky} | Life

My Dearest Punky,

Last Thursday you turned six! SIX!!! I swear, some days it feels like you were only born yesterday. Yet there you are, seeming to morph into a young lady before my very eyes.

This last year has been an interesting one. You started big school, and to say I'm so proud of you and the way you've handled such a big transition would be an understatement. My heart just about bursts with pride when I see how far you've come.

They paved paradise {to build a bunch of houses} | Life

On Sunday we took the girls for a walk & bike ride. It's been a little while since we've done this, as the weather hasn't been great and we've had a bit on lately. Sunday however, the weather was lovely, the sun was shining and the breeze was still nice & cool, perfect walking/biking weather.

So we chucked the bikes & the girls in the car and drove down the road to the track for some family time. We're really lucky to have a nice long, flat walking track 2 minutes from our house, that has a mostly smooth path that's perfect for young bike-riders, and lots of green grass, trees, marshes & shady spots for exploring & resting along the way.

Engaging stories | Life

I am so close to finishing editing the wedding I shot at the end of October I can almost taste it! Editing is one of the fun parts of being a photographer, but even when you love it, when you're working on such a big job you really need to take a break and step away from it so you can come back with fresh eyes.

I'm really looking forward to putting together the slideshow when I'm done so I can show you guys how gorgeous this couple were, so loved up and FUN! Working on all of these wedding photos has had me thinking back to my own wedding and I thought I'd share a few of my favourite photos from the day, as well as my engagement story with you today.

National Adoption Awareness Week { #aHomeForEveryChild } | Life

Here's a staggering fact for you...
"30,000 children in Australia are in need of a permanent home{1}."

And another one...
"Internationally, there are an estimated 13 million orphans who have lost both parents{2}, and an estimated 8 million children who are growing up in institutions around the world{3}."

Those are some pretty staggering numbers. And yet, in 2016 only 278 adoptions took place.

Shooting through 2017 {October} | #52weekproject

I remember back at tafe in 2015 saying to someone that there was no way I was ever going to shoot weddings. I simply couldn't imagine anything more stressful. Fast forward two years and here I am, having just spent the weekend shooting my 5th wedding.

I honestly thought it was something I just wouldn't do, and yet now that I've started, I find I love it! They're so much fun! I thrive under the pressure, and nothing beats getting to hang out with fun couples on one of the biggest days of their lives.

The Whirlwind {of weekends & work} | Life

As we approach the end of October I can't help but feel like I need to brace myself for the oncoming storm which is the holiday season. It's only a month until Punky turns 6, a birthday closely followed by 3 more, and then Christmas. I have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. On the one hand, I love all the social occasions and time spent with friends & family, on the other hand, the stress of coordinating it all and making sure I don't forget something important can be huge!

This year the whirlwind of the end of the year has started early. Last Thursday to be exact.

Taking Stock {October 2017} | Life

I had grand plans to write a post about something important & amazing, and then I found my old laptop. The one I play Sims 3 on. Cue the weekend being taken up by animated people who don't speak english and need a lot of looking after. It was like having babies again!

As a consequence, all ideas for blogging have promptly fled my head as I dream about setting up sequences of activities and google how to reset my sim when their legs have mysteriously fallen through the grass and can't move. And did I mention Woohoo-ing? Well there was woohoo-ing too.

If the previous paragraph makes no sense to you then you've probably had a way more productive 72 hours than I have!

To compensate for my descent in to Sim madness I thought I might dust off the old Taking Stock list from Pip at Meet me at Mike's and take the easy way out of my lack of post inspiration. So here goes...

Shooting through 2017 {September} | 52 week project

I feel like I say this every month (probably because I do!) but man, where has this year gone! My mind just cannot compute the fact that it's October. Probably because we were away cruising on the Carnival Spirit for 2 weeks in September, I feel like September didn't really happen. It's like holiday time exists in its own magical dimension and time in the outside world ceases to exist while you're within that dimension. And so it is with a shock when you leave that magical dimension and rejoin the outside the world, time seems to have jumped forward.

Aside from our holiday, September was a big month for another reason, and that was because the girls got their first real haircuts (fringe trims by Dad do not count!). I thought at first there would be resistance to this but they were surprisingly keen for it, and I gotta say, particularly in Zee's case, I wish we'd done it sooner. The bob is beyond cute on her!

As you can you imagine, half of the photos in this post will be from our holiday, seeing as we did spend two weeks out of the four cruising. Before I get into the photos though, I just wanted to share a little for those with an interest in photography. Feel free to skip to the pretty pictures if reading technical stuff about photography isn't your thing!

The Chef's Table {dining on the Carnival Spirit} | Travels

It's no secret that while I'm not a big fan of cooking, I'm a very big fan of eating. When I was younger I was super fussy, and I hated trying new things. Now as an adult I am making up for all that lost time by being pretty much keen to try just about anything in the pursuit of a good meal.

I've read mixed reviews about the food on cruise ships, but for me, I was lucky in that just about every meal I had was good, if not great. There are a number of different food & dining options on the Carnival Spirit and we tried most of them.

Cruise with me baby {on the Carnival Spirit} | Travels

The worst thing about going on holidays is that they have to end. And they go so fast.

When you're preparing and packing it feels like it will take a lifetime to get ready. No matter how long you're going away for, you can't imagine the end of your holiday. And then suddenly, the day of departure arrives, and then just as suddenly, it's time to head home.

And so it was with our 10 night cruise. The lead-up to the cruise and all the packing and getting ready seemed to take forever! It felt like we would never actually step foot on that big boat. But step foot we did, and boy oh boy, did the holiday go waaaaay too quickly!

Cruisin' {a quick post for IBOT} | Travels

I'm hoping that I'll get a chance at some stage to upload some photos from our cruise so far, but just in case I don't I thought it best to at least make sure I got the linky up for you guys.

Shooting through 2017 {August} | #52weekproject

As you read this, I will most likely be running around in a state of sickened anticipation, checking & double-checking my list to make sure that I haven't forgotten anything for our trip. We leave today to spend 10 nights cruising around the south pacific and I can't wait! So you won't really hear much from me over the next two weeks, but rest assured, I'll have more than a few photos & stories to share with you when I get back.

So while I'm sitting on a train or the dock convinced we've forgotten something important, please enjoy the images from August that are part of my 52 week project...

Counting down... {and cutting hair} | Life

The countdown is on to our big family cruise holiday. My Mum turns 60 on Sunday, and two days later Mum & my stepdad, along with my sisters, brother, Dave & the girls and my nephew & brothers-in-law will board the Carnival Spirit for 10 nights of cruising to the South Pacific.

To say we're all excited would be an understatement! There's a sense of nervous anticipation amongst us as we complete our on-line check-ins, make packing lists & wash clothes and look forward to the day of embarkation. This will be the girls first "big" holiday, and the longest we've travelled with them. They have been counting down the days with glee, and I think this next week or so is going to be the hardest for them. They keep asking how many sleeps until we leave, and as the numbers dwindle the anticipation ramps up.

5 reasons I'm sad winter is about to end | Life

I was struggling to come up with something to write about for today, so I put the call out to my lovely #teamIBOT peeps for some prompts & suggestions last night. The lovely Claire from Life on Wallace came back with the prompt "reasons you're pleased winter is nearly over" and I thought I could work with that.

The thing is, I'm not pleased winter is nearly over. I'm anything but pleased, actually! The only thing I have to look forward to about winter being over is our cruise in a few weeks time. Other than that, no good can come of winter ending!!!

Why? Let me tell you...

On being creative (and why it's good for you) | Life

Shooting through 2017 {July} | #52weekproject

Oh July, what a gloriously beautiful month you were. Busy, as always, but filled with some beautiful winter weather, notwithstanding that freak 28 degree day on Zee's birthday! It's only 5 weeks now until we head off on our 10 night cruise to the South Pacific to celebrate my Mum's 60th birthday. We are all beyond excited, and I can't quite believe it's come around so fast.

Birthdays & Bubbles {Zee turns four} | Life

Zee turned four on Sunday. FOUR! How did that happen. It feels like only yesterday I was cuddling her in the hospital, enjoying the feel of her warm little body snuggled in to mine, searching her face for similarities to her sister's, wondering what kind of person this new little human was going to be.

Slowing Down {and finding clarity} | Life

We've had quite a busy week this last, getting the girls settled back in to the routine of school & preschool, and working on a couple of jobs that I've been staring down the barrel of a deadline on. When it comes to work, it never rains but it pours, and right now, there's a bit of rain coming my way.

We're going on a family cruise in September. 10 nights in the South Pacific to celebrate my Mum's 60th birthday. To say I'm excited would be an understatement! The girls are even more excited than that, if it's possible. They ask me every day if we'll be going on the 'big boat' tomorrow and are always disappointed when I say no. I remind them that we will be soon enough though, and we talk about all the fun things we'll do on our holiday.

The Lasts {that you don't know are lasts} | Life

I remember the last time I saw my Grandma alive. She'd been very sick in the ICU for the previous two weeks, suffering from a golden staph infection that was causing other complications. She was already fighting leaukemia, and as any kind of infection can be extremely serious for someone undergoing cancer treatment, we knew this was probably a fight she wasn't going to win.

Still, we kept up hope, but when they moved her to the palliative care ward we all knew it was only a matter of time. I remember that Saturday afternoon. She was lying in the bed and Mum was sitting beside her, holding her hand. She hadn't been conscious for most of the last two weeks, and I remember when it was time to leave I didn't want to say goodbye.

Shooting through 2017 {June} | #52weekproject

What a month June was! We had so much happening, from kitchen renovations to my birthday to the end of term 2, it's been a bit of a whirlwind to be honest. It also hasn't helped that the last week I've been quite unwell and so didn't really have any energy to do all the little things that still need doing in the kitchen, but I'm sure we'll get there eventually.

How to transform your kitchen {in just 4 days!} | Life

If you've come here looking for tips on how to really transform your kitchen you might be a little disappointed, I'm sorry! Much like my post back in 2014 about our bathroom renovation, the title of this post is more tongue-in-cheek than anything else. Because honestly, even after the last week, I still would have no idea how to renovate a kitchen, I was mostly just a very grateful observer who moved things about when asked and vacuumed up some dust!

The real hard work was done by Dave and his parents. Seriously, between the 3 of them (and my sister-in-law, who not only designed & project-managed but donated the kitchen!) they managed to demolish the old kitchen and install the new one in 4 days. Less really, if you consider that the 4th day was the day the bench was installed, and that was done by a professional!

But let me start at the beginning...

Visual Love Letters {in photos + film} | Life

As you all probably know very well by now, I take a lot of photos of my girls. A large section of those photos form a project that I do each year, called a 52 week project. Basically the idea is I take a portrait a week of each of the girls separately, as well as one of them together. At the end of every year I then compile those images in to a photobook to have printed and keep on my shelf.

Library Adventures {Our Favourite Books | June 2017} | Reading

We've been spending quite a bit of time at the library lately, the girls have been thrilled to be able to borrow so many new books every couple of weeks, and it's become a bit of a highlight for both them and me. It thrills me to see them love books and reading so much and I am so happy to be raising two little bookworms.

Long Weekends {and why I love them again} | Life

There is something so nice about a long weekend. Especially now that Punky is at school, I was positively giddy with the prospect of 3 whole days of not making lunches and washing uniforms. For so many years weekends just meant the same old thing, they were no different to every other day of the week. Now that the girls are a little older and Punky is at school, I have a new-found appreciation of the humble weekend.

Friday nights have become my favourite again, we take them easy, there is no bedtime to stick to or lunches to make, we can read as many books as we want without having to worry about the time (which is a very good thing now that we can't get away with anything less than 3 books before bed each night!).

Shooting through 2017 {May} | #52weekproject

May, beautiful May, how I am going to miss you! Just like April, I think May is also one of my favourite months, it's just so pretty! Not only do we really start to see that autumn colour in the leaves & the light, but it's also the month that Vivid kicks off in Sydney and it's a photographer's delight! That image up there (a double exposure taken at The Rocks) is one I took last week when I went in to the city with some Tafe friends to celebrate Ian's birthday (he's the model in my picture) and shoot the lights. The best thing about going out with other photographers is that they don't mind being your model, and it doesn't matter to them if you stand in the same spot for 20 minutes trying to experiment or perfect the shot because they are doing the same thing!

Bloggy Birthdays {and people who just won't go away} | Blogging

Eight years ago on a Thursday night, I decided for some unknown reason to start a blog. Ok, maybe not for an unknown reason if you read my first post (you really should, it's only a few paragraphs long and it doesn't even have any pictures!!!), but for reasons that are very different now, I opened up a blogger account, named my blog A Study in Contradictions and chose what I thought was a really beautiful layout and colour scheme for my maiden voyage in to the world of internet writing.

Books that should be TV shows | Entertainment

As many of you know, I'm an avid bookworm. Aside from photography (and of course my family) books and reading are my other great passion in life. Reading for me is as necessary as breathing and taking photos. I have to read every day or I go a little crazy. It's why, when I first started working, I looked for jobs that had to do with books. I ended up selling & marketing books, which is not a bad career when you've been known to blow three quarters of your pay check in a bookshop less than 24 hours after it's hit your bank account!

Getting in the picture {family photography with Katherine Millard} | Life

A few weeks ago, on a sunny Saturday morning, the girls and I met up with my sister and nephew T-Bear at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Sydney. It was an absolutely beautiful autumn day, not too hot, not too cold and not too windy. The sky was as blue as can be and we had a very good reason for being there.

After walking through the park to the restaurant in the middle and availing ourselves of the facilities, I saw a lady walking towards me smiling. This was Katherine. Our reason for being at the Gardens.

It's time {for another Tosser Trophy} | Laughs

What a week it's been for Tossers. Actually, considering how long it has been since I last awarded a Tosser Trophy (2 years 8 months to be more exact) it's been quite the time. I feel like there are at least 20 blog posts I could write to hand out Tosser Trophys to the many people who have surely earned them since September 2014. But honestly, I think I'm coming down with a cold so I'll content myself with just handing out 3 this week. I'm sure you'll all join with me in giving these people your best half-hearted golf claps.

It never rains {but it pours!} | Life

You know that old saying "it never rains but it pours"?

That has been our life the last 2 months...

Tuesday, 25 April 2017

Shooting through 2017 {April} | #52weekproject

Oh April, you probably have to be one of my most favourite months of the year. The days are still warm but not sweatingly so, the evenings are cool, but not to the point where I need to be wearing socks & 2 pairs of pants (I'm not the only who does that right?). Autumn is hands down my favourite time of  year, and I'm so thankful that the school holidays happen in April too.

School Holidays {the most wonderful time of the year} | Life

I've come to the conclusion that I am one of those parents that likes school holidays. Scratch that, I LOVE school holidays! No lunches to make, school uniforms to wash, we don't have to be out of the house by a certain rushed time, and most importantly? I have my Punky back, the one I don't dread picking up from school because she will inevitably be so tired & worn out from learning and being on her best behaviour all day that the afternoons & evenings till bedtime are a nightmare that Dave and I will barely survive.

She works hard {for the money} | Photography

Hoooo boy I have I been busy! I guess like with anything, work begets work. I'm not complaining, I'm getting paid to do something I love and there aren't too many people in this world who can say that!

This weekend just got I spent Saturday afternoon with the most delightful family of 5, taking some photos and filming some video. Then on Sunday I spent the afternoon & evening filming a beautiful wedding with some really lovely people. It was a wonderful experience, and a real learning curve, being the one filming rather than taking photographs. I can't wait till I have time to sit down and go through all of the footage from the day and start putting it together.

Taking Stock {March 2017} | IBOT

I've been sick the last 4 days. It all started last Tuesday afternoon when I got a call to pick up Punky from school. She said she wasn't feeling well, and that she had poked herself in the eye earlier. I just put it down to being over-tired and worn out from a big first term of school. After resting on the lounge for an hour after she got home from school she was back to her old self, terrorizing Zee.

And then, on Wednesday night she came out to us just before bedtime complaining of a really sore ear. Alarm bells started ringing. I checked her temperature and sure enough it was nudging 39. So we gave her a dose of Panadol to help with the pain of her ear enough to let her get some sleep. It was around this time I noticed that I wasn't really feeling great either.

Shooting through 2017 {March} | Photography

I truly can't believe we are at the end of March. How did this happen? There's only one more week left of Punky's first term of school! It's gone by in such a whirlwind of lunches and readers and washing, it's insane! I must admit that I'm looking forward to the school holidays and not having to worry about lunches for a couple of weeks. Being able to have lazy mornings where we can stay in our pyjamas and not have to get up and go anywhere. It's going to be nice!

I have my first parent-teacher interview this afternoon and I'm really looking forward to hearing in more detail how Punky has been going in this first term. She has quite a few friends now, one of whom she's become such good friends with that her teacher has had to separate them so they don't constantly talk! Every day it becomes more and more obvious that this girl is almost a carbon copy of her mother!

Hello Sun {We've missed you!} | Life

It feels like it's been raining forever. It's only been about a week and a half of wet weather, but when you have young children, even one rainy day can feel like a lifetime. I don't know about you, but in our family, spending time outside isn't just something we love to do, it's something we need to do.

There's just something so liberating about spending time in the great outdoors, even if that outdoors is simply your own backyard. Feeling the sun on your skin, the breeze in your hair, it's invigorating, and it's guaranteed to calm everyone down. At least in this house it is!

Between the ridiculously hot, record-breaking summer, and now the non-stop rain, our backyard-time has been sorely limited. So when the sun finally peeked it's nose out from behind the clouds on Sunday afternoon, we didn't care that the grass was as high as Zee's knees, the girls and I were outside quicker than you could say "it's raining cats & dogs!".

Reasons my kid can't go to sleep {aka any excuse will do!} | Parenting

Oh boy, what a week. We've been really busy around these parts this last week, and it's not going to let up, with the next 2 weekends fully booked with photography jobs (and baby-sitting my nephew, I can't wait!), not to mention working at my new job.

New job? Yep, I forgot to mention the other week that I've just taken on a new casual gig helping out at a photography studio not too far from my house, The Good Egg Studio. The owner is a photographer himself and this year he'll be away shooting at each round of the Australian Rally Championship, so he needs someone reliable to be around and open the studio when there are bookings while he is away.

Shooting through 2017 {February} | Photography

Now that it's March it's time for another update on my current photography projects. I've got my four 52 week projects happening (although at this stage it's rather more like 3 as I haven't shot anything for my personal project since January!) as well as my Day in the Life 365 project.

So far I'm doing ok on the 365, there have been a couple of days where I've only remembered to take a picture at the very end of the day, and once or twice I've forgotten to take a photo all together! I'm trying to stress too much about that though and making it up by shooting an extra photo the following day. Near enough is good enough in my books when it comes to this 365, as I think if I stress too much I'll give it up all together!

Things I want to remember {last days of summer} | Life

Can you believe today is the last official day of summer?! I'm sure March has got a few hot days still up her sleeve, but for the most part, the weather the last week has been positively gorgeous! Honestly though, anything that isn't 47 degrees is pretty gorgeous!

It's been a long, hot summer but despite the heat it's been one of our best summers in a while. We didn't get up to a great deal, but we spent lots of time together as a family and outside and that's all that really matters.

What I've learnt {since becoming a School Mum} | Parenting

"I will admit I spent a good amount of time the other weekend after Punky started school looking back at old photos and videos and just couldn't believe that this incredible part of our life was over! It's really bizarre, when I was going through it, dealing with toddlers & preschoolers and just generally all the shenanigans that came with having two kids at home, it felt like it would never end. And now it suddenly has and I don't know how I really feel about it. It's almost a bit like grief to be honest. A bittersweet kind of grief because, on the one hand, there is this pride in seeing my little one go off to school and navigate such a huge life transition, as well as excitement at the fact that I can actually see my lounge room floor these days for more than 30 seconds. But on the other hand is this realisation that our life will never be like that again, we've turned a corner, closed a door, started a new chapter, and it's all kinds of sad & scary. Parenting really is the ultimate in contradictions!"

Tuesday, 14 February 2017

Shooting through 2017 {January 16-31} | 52 week project

Can you believe it's mid-February already?! Ever since Punky started school it feels like time has just suddenly sped up! Which is slightly weird, you would think it would drag a bit now, what with all the lunches and things to remember every day, but no.

My wish for you {on your first day of school} | IBOT

Today is the day. It's been 5 years, 2 months, 1 week and 5 days in the making. At times it felt like it would never happen. At other times, like today, it feels like just the blink of an eye. Sometimes even less than that. Like one minute I was looking down at your tiny little head as you suckled at my breast, and then I looked up and there you were, dressed in your new uniform and your shiny black shoes, scared but excited to begin this next chapter of your life.

Today you start school for the very first time.

Dream horses {and nightmare snakes} | IBOT

A couple of weeks ago I went out to the garage to put on some washing. Sadly our 'laundry' is in the back part of our garage, so it can be pretty creepy going out there sometimes, Bug City it could probably by described as when the surface spray is losing it's power.

As I'm standing there popping clothes in the machine I heard a noise. To be honest, I'm not actually sure if I heard a noise or if some ancient instinct for self-preservation sensed the movement, but something made me look down. No more than a metre from my foot was the questing head of a Red-Bellied Black Snake, sliding out from between the bar fridge and the dryer.

Thirty-Eight to Forty-Five {52 week project 2016} | Photography

At the end of last year I got a little behind in posting my 52 week project images on the blog, so I thought, seeing as I'm already well in to my 52 week projects for 2017 (not to mention a 365 project too!) I should really finish blogging the last 14 weeks of my 2016 photos. So today and next Thursday I'll finish off the series. I'd love to hear your thoughts on your favourite images.

As many of you would know, for the last 2 years I've undertaken some 52 week projects where I captured a portrait each week of the girls, both individually and together. It's been so much fun, and it's so great to be able to look back over those photos and see how much they've changed. I've just put in the order for my 2016 52 week project images to be printed in a photo book and I can't wait to get it back.

There is just something about being able to sit and hold something tangible in your hands, to slowly turn the pages and look closely at the images. I find it so much more satisfying and fun than looking at images on a screen. One of my personal goals for this year is to update the photos on my walls with more recent ones.
